Defending the digital arena, protecting the spirit of sport

Similar to how athletes may train, plan, study challenges and trust their support teams, cybersecurity professionals also prepare, monitor risks, respond quickly and collaborate to protect the digital arena. In both fields, every decision matters and there is little room for hesitation.

In this article, we explore how these shared values connect the sporting world and cybersecurity. We also delve into how Atos Security Operations Center (SOC) teams have collaborated with leading sporting organizations at major events to maintain focus where it belongs: on the competition, the fans and the spirit of sport so that major events remain secure and uninterrupted.

A winning mindset

Becoming an elite athlete requires complete dedication to a sport, and often to a specific discipline. This commitment is driven by passion, which makes the necessary sacrifices acceptable. Athletes build success through discipline, consistency and the ability to train with purpose day after day. Trust is the key factor in an athlete’s journey – trust in their coaches, their teammates and wider support environment. This allows them to focus on the aspects they can control. Challenging themselves pushes them to improve and reach their full potential.

Cybersecurity professionals share many of these values too. They operate with extreme rigor, and rely on their team, their processes and their tools. Like in team sports, cybersecurity depends on strong collaboration, both within the team and with their wider environment. Just like elite athletes, cybersecurity professionals must continuously adapt and improve the security posture of the systems they protect.

Critical moments. Critical decisions.

What does a football goalkeeper facing a penalty kick have in common with an SOC analyst triaging an alert? Both have seconds to react, and the cost of a mistake is high.

On match day, a split-second decision can win or lose a competition. The pressure at an SOC during a major sporting event is the same. While millions of fans watch the live broadcast, cyber adversaries launch targeted attacks in the shadows, trying to disrupt digital services. For years, athletes have been trained to block out stadium noise and focus on the competition. Under similar circumstances, cyber analysts must filter out thousands of benign alerts to stop a single, critical threat.

One big difference, however, is that when a goalkeeper makes a save, the entire stadium erupts in roars. When an SOC analyst makes a save, the game simply continues without interruption.

The action behind the scenes

While the world watches athletes break records, an invisible digital shield works continuously and relentlessly in the background, safeguarding the digital arena — the IT infrastructure, satellite signals, media and communications, and everything required to connect fans around the world to the largest events on the sports calendar.

At Atos, we’ve collaborated with sports organizations on some of world's most celebrated sporting stages, like the Olympic Games and UEFA National Team Football. Securing events of these massive proportions meant our analysts had to manage a complex digital arena in real time, monitoring billions of events to spot anomalies instantly, all while proactively hunting threats before they could strike.

In the event of an incident, the SOC team responds rapidly to isolate and neutralize it. They share real-time intelligence with organizers and national security agencies. Ultimately, this is a massive team effort that combines cutting-edge technology with human expertise, ensuring the focus stays exactly where it belongs: on the field.

Experience shows that major sporting events can also be targeted by politically motivated cyberattacks. Attackers may try to disrupt services, damage trust or use the event’s global reach to spread their message. SOC teams help reduce this risk through real-time monitoring, threat intelligence, fast incident response and close cooperation with event organizers and security partners.

At major events, cybersecurity protects more than technology. It helps keep the event running smoothly.

No victory without preparation

Cybersecurity teams’ prep activities for a sporting event begin long before the event itself and require careful planning. The process starts with a business-impact analysis to map critical data and systems and define the most effective risk-mitigation measures.

Security teams are involved in the design and architecture phase to ensure best practices are embedded right from the start. In parallel, controls are implemented to detect deviations from defined standards and trigger remediations when needed. Penetration tests are then conducted to assess the security posture of applications and give teams sufficient time to address vulnerabilities before the event.

Several simulations follow, starting with red team exercises designed to test monitoring capabilities, the processes themselves and the teams’ readiness. Technology rehearsals are also carried out to validate cybersecurity integration with other support functions, strengthening communication and coordination of the technology organization.

Like elite athletes, cybersecurity teams prepare with discipline, structure and experience. Nothing is left to chance.

Keep the game moving

As soon as the first whistle blows, months of preparation transition into live, high-pressure execution. The mission is simple: maintain service continuity and ensure the global audience enjoys the uninterrupted event safely.

To achieve this, SOC teams operate in continuous, overlapping shifts to ensure 24/7 vigilance. If and when a live incident occurs, there‘s no time for hesitation. The SOC analysts rely on rapid decision-making and pre-approved playbooks to instantly isolate threats.

If a complex attack slips through, strict escalation procedures ensure that senior experts are instantly brought in to mitigate the risk. By handling minor alerts automatically, the focus is kept on high-severity anomalies. Ultimately, SOC success is measured by the smooth and seamless broadcasts that are met with cheers and excitement across the world. Only Atos SOC teams know what’s been averted and how they’ve pulled off another critical win.

Securing the spirit of sport

Cybersecurity plays an essential role in the successful delivery of major sporting events. By helping ensure that competitions run in the best possible conditions, it allows the spotlight to remain where it belongs: on the field. It helps preserve trust in the results, supports the principles of fair play and enables organizers to focus their efforts on delivering a safe and memorable experience for fans.

Beyond the technical service provided, cybersecurity has a discreet but decisive impact on the event, echoing values shared by all parties involved. Athletes, organizers, technical teams and partners are united by trust, discipline, resilience and the desire to achieve something greater together.

Whether on the field of play or behind the digital scenes, true performance is never only individual. It’s built collectively, through preparation, experience and a commitment to the belief that protecting the spirit of sport protects the moments that unite us.
